United States Department of Agriculture β€œSUN Bucks” is the common name for the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer program (Summer EBT), a federally funded nutrition assistance program that helps families buy food for school-aged children during the summer when school meals are unavailable.

Eligible families receive a grocery benefit card or electronic deposit that can be used to purchase food items at approved stores, similar to SNAP benefits. The program is designed to help reduce childhood hunger and food insecurity during summer break.

Key points about SUN Bucks:

Β·  Provides summer grocery benefits for eligible children.

Β·  Benefits are typically issued once per summer.

Β·  Can be used to buy qualifying food items at participating retailers.

Β·  Often automatically available to children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals or other assistance programs.

In Washington, the program is administered through state agencies in partnership with schools and nutrition programs.

Notification letters and SUN Bucks cards will be mailed out soon. As a result, there may be an increase in calls to our offices regarding the program.

I would encourage any staff receiving these calls to please direct questions to the SUN Bucks call centers or to DSHS for assistance (per OSPI), as they will be best equipped to answer specific eligibility and benefit questions.

Thank you for your cooperation and assistance.
