Farm Unit

Zeanna Zavodsky, the Lewis County Dairy Princess, recently visited Mrs. Givens’ Kindergarten Room 31 to present to Mossyrock’s kindergarten students. Miss Mulligan’s kindergarten class joined as well, creating a shared learning experience for both classrooms.

Representing Lewis County dairy farmers, Zeanna shared what daily life is like on a working dairy farm and taught students important facts about cows. She explained the responsibilities and requirements of becoming a Dairy Princess, giving students a glimpse into both agricultural life and community leadership. Throughout the presentation, she answered thoughtful questions from students and read a story that connected directly to their ongoing farm unit studies.

The highlight of the visit came when students stepped outside to the parking lot, where Zeanna had brought two six-week-old dairy heifer calves in a livestock trailer. With careful supervision, students gently petted the calves and watched as they eagerly drank bottles of milk. Excited squeals and laughter filled the air as the young learners experienced hands-on agriculture up close.

To complete the experience, Zeanna surprised each child with a cup of ice cream. Earlier in her presentation, she had explained that ice cream is made from cow’s milk, helping students connect their classroom learning to something familiar and enjoyable.

The visit served as the culminating activity for the kindergarten farm unit, bringing classroom lessons to life in a joyful, meaningful, and memorable way. Experiences like this not only deepen student understanding but also strengthen connections between Mossyrock schools and the broader agricultural community that plays such an important role in Lewis County.
