Dear Mossyrock School District Employees and Community Members:

I’m writing to give you an update on our process for hiring a new superintendent.  To that end, let me present a short recap.  Last year we hired an interim superintendent, Glenn Malone, to guide us through a very difficult school year.  In November Glenn indicated that he was not interested in becoming the permanent Mossyrock superintendent.  That said, the Mossyrock superintendent opening was posted on the WASA and WSSDA websites in early December.  Applications were taken through January 31st.   On February 8th the School Board screened the applications and selected three candidates to invite for interviews.

On February 17th the School Board interviewed the three candidates.  A panel of sixteen people consisting of district employees and community members, also observed the interviews and provided feedback to the Board about both candidates.  We want to say a special thank you to these people.  The time they put in and the feedback they provided is valued and appreciated.

Shortly after the interviews the Board met in an executive session to review the feedback from the Observer Panel.  During our deliberations we also reviewed resumés, reference letters, and information gathered from reference checks.  After a lengthy discussion we decided to offer the superintendent position to Larry Markuson from White Sulphur Springs, Montana.  This was a very difficult decision for the Board to make.  Board members felt that there were two strong candidates but felt that Markuson was a better fit for the community and the school district.

Markuson has served as a superintendent in Montana for over 17 years.  He has been in his current district for seven years.  Although White Sulphur Springs School District has only 200 students, the Board feels that Markuson will make a seamless transition to Mossyrock and our 500+ students.

Markuson’s references describe him as hard working, personable, professional, and a good steward of public funds.  He has a successful track record in passing levies and bonds and has a good understanding of school finances.  In addition, he is known for his student-focused decision making and his strong interest in making sure that all students succeed.

Larry Markuson will assume his duties on July 1, 2021.  We think he’ll be a great addition to our community and a strong leader for our schools.

On behalf of the School Board

Denise Weise, Board Chair
